Welfare support FAQ

  • What does RoR do to help former racehorses?

We provide a safety net for Thoroughbreds throughout their lives after racing. Our welfare programmes support horses transitioning out of the sport, those facing health issues, or in need of urgent help.

  • How many horses do you support each year?

In 2024, we provided direct assistance to 66 individual horses through our key welfare programmes—a 22% increase from 2023, reflecting the growing demand due to rising economic pressures on owners.

  • What if I’m struggling to care for my ex-racehorse?

If your circumstances change and your horse’s care is at risk, our Vulnerable Horse Scheme (VHS) may be able to help. Please email [email protected] to apply. In 2024, this scheme supported dozens of horses at a critical point in their lives.

  • What help is there for recently retired racehorses?

Our Retraining Assessment Programme (RAP) offers professional behavioural and vet assessments to help identify the right next steps. It’s designed to ensure a safe, suitable, and supported transition from racing into a new career or home.

  • What if I find a Thoroughbred in urgent need?

Call us immediately on 01488 648998. Our Emergency Relief for Thoroughbreds (ERT) scheme can help with urgent needs—such as vet care, transport, or euthanasia if necessary. Every year, we respond to emergency cases that would otherwise be left without help.

  • Who qualifies as a vulnerable horse

A Thoroughbred at genuine risk without charitable intervention—typically due to owner hardship, injury, or other welfare concerns. Each case is reviewed individually, and support is tailored to the horse’s needs.

  • Why do you need public donations if racing supports RoR?

While we receive vital support from the racing industry, demand consistently outstrips funding. Public donations are essential to ensure no Thoroughbred is left behind, especially as more owners struggle in the current climate.

  • What will my donation be used for?

Your support goes directly to helping horses—covering retraining, veterinary care, transport, and essential welfare assessments. Each horse we assist can require up to £10,000 in staged support, depending on their individual needs.
