Emergency Relief for Thoroughbreds
About ERT
In emergency situations, we provide financial assistance through the Emergency Relief for Thoroughbreds (ERT) fund for Thoroughbreds bred to race who are found in poor health and require immediate veterinary care.
We may offer funds to help cover:
- Transport costs to move the horse to a suitable location for urgent care.
- Veterinary assessment and treatment costs, as well as ongoing care expenses such as farriery and general management from the time the horse is found until it is either ready for rehoming, or a decision is made regarding its future.
- Euthanasia costs, but only if no long-term welfare solution can be found and this is recommended by a veterinary surgeon.
Funding period
Financial support will cover the period between:
- The moment the horse is first found and identified as needing urgent care, and
- When the horse is assessed as ready for rehabilitation or a decision is made (with the owner’s agreement) to euthanise.
