Retrainer Approval Scheme

Our Retrainer Approval Scheme (RAS) helps owners and trainers find trusted, welfare-focused retrainers for former racehorses.

All approved retrainers have been checked by RoR and the British Horseracing Association (BHA) Stable Inspectorate to make sure horses receive the right care, training and support when leaving racing.

The scheme is jointly funded by the Racing Foundation and John Pearce Foundation.

Why the scheme matters

There are many retrainers across Britain, but standards can vary. The scheme gives owners and trainers confidence that their horse will go to an operation that puts welfare first and follows good practice in retraining and rehoming.

How it works

Retrainers apply to join the scheme and are assessed on their:

  • Equine management
  • Rehoming processes
  • Facilities
  • Legislative compliance (including insurance and safeguarding).

Each approved retrainer is visited and reviewed annually.

Find an approved retrainer

We’re currently completing the first round of assessments, and the list of approved retrainers will be published here soon.

Once live, the list will include both charity partners and commercial retrainers who have met the required standards and demonstrated best practice.
