blog The lowdown on RoR endurance

8th August 2024

Are you aware of the RoR Endurance Series and the pathway from grassroots to the Elite Endurance Performance Award? If not, here's what you need to know!

If you have a former racehorse and are interested in long distance riding, the RoR Endurance Series offer something for everyone.

How to get started

To participate, you'll need to join Endurance GB (EGB) as either a full or associate member, or be a member of the Scottish Endurance Riding Club (SERC). Pleasure riders can enter on a one-off day entry, or you can 'try before you buy' in competitive rides. Make sure your EGB/SERC membership shows your horse is registered with RoR and that you've paid the annual fee for RoR competition membership. You can register your horse here.

The Endurance Seven Challenge

Starting out in endurance events might seem daunting, so we've partnered with ECB to offer first-timers a pleasure ride completion rosette. If you're then bitten by the bug, taking part in the Endurance Seven (E7), kindly supported by the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Trust, allows riders to collect ride distances and receive rewards for completing one of seven key distances. These schemes are open to all former racehorses who have trained and raced anywhere in the world.

The Elite Endurance Performance Award

To qualify for the prestigious Elite Endurance Performance Award, recognised by both EGB and RoR, your horse must have raced in Great Britain. This award, presented at the EGB AGM and the RoR Awards is sponsored by the Jockey Club and includes prize money. If your horse meets the criteria and has RoR competition membership, you'll automatically be entered, as long as you haven't previously won the award.

Exciting news for 2025

In the 2025 season, RoR teams will be reintroduced as part of the Clubs Championship. Keep an eye out for updates in the new year on how to join a regional RoR team.

Be Like Tango Sky!

Tango Sky and Leanne Hall have had an incredible season, enjoying numerous pleasure and graded rides with various EGB groups across the north and midlands. Despite challenging weather early in the season, they have managed to clock up 320km and earn plenty of E7 rewards along the way.

After a short break in July, they headed to Scotland for a week of exploring the stunning countryside, including a memorable visit to Drumlanrig Castle. This weekend, they’ll test their fitness at a pleasure ride in Nottinghamshire, with plans to compete at Well Vale in the coming weeks. One of their favourite rides, Lion's Tail in Leicestershire and Rutland, is coming up in September, which might be their last competitive ride of the season, though they plan to participate in more pleasure rides.
